With the price of gasoline at an all-time high and airfares on the rise, now is the perfect time for travelers to stay closer to home and rediscover their own backyards. Indeed, many vacationers are opting for a “staycation” this year, but rather than staying put, many will find that there is great sightseeing, entertainment and family-friendly attractions only a tank-of-gas away.
VibeAgent.com, a social network hotel search site, produced a list of hotels within a one-tank driving distance of the 10 most populous U.S. cities. This site might be considered a blend of searching for hotels on kayak.com and reading user reviews on tripadvisor.com. It is a combination under one URL of what Priceline does with mytravelguide.com.
The new website claims to combine personal reviews by vacationers with tagging that allows users to categorize the hotels they review. All this is supposed to make it easier for other travelers to find hotels with the ambiance they are seeking.
There are still a few bugs to be worked out, like definitions of terms like “historic, rustic, or romantic.” Some vibeagent.com reviewers consider the hotel itself historic; others claim a modern hotel in the middle of a historic district qualifies as well. Romantic to one might mean frilly, quaint and quiet; to another it might mean beautiful views from a modern, Spartan room.
The search engine doesn’t allows users to search within a one-tank drive to destinations, however the number of hotels listed would be unmanageable. So users have to figure out that tank-of-gas distance on their own and then choose what cities they might want to visit. Meaning, whatever hotel search engine or online travel agency one uses will probably produce a similar list.
That being said, the concept of a tank-of-gas-away hotels and B&Bs is something that many folk might want to consider for a vacation or quick getaway this summer. If that stay is combined with any free gas promotions offered by many hotels and B&Bs the deal gets even better. Here is the list compiled by vibeagent.com.
