5 ways to avoid danger
Travel columnist Christopher Elliott shares his wisdom on how to keep safe when danger arises on your travels. Says Elliott: “You can’t necessarily avoid a near-miss when you’re traveling. But you can avoid putting yourself in a situation where you’ll have a close call. And if something goes wrong, you can take precautions to make sure things don’t get any worse.” Among his suggestions: Don’t take unnecessary risks (like flying that Nigerian airline with a poor safety record), never assume an emergency evacuation is just a drill and don’t let close-calls weigh too heavily on your mind. Editor’s note: this writer agrees with Mr. Elliott’s former editor, comedian George Carlin and all amateur grammarians who rightly point out that a “near-miss” describes a collision, but we know what you mean, Chris. You’ll find Mr. Carlin’s colorful bit here. Warning: Bit contains curse words (it is George Carlin, people). Consider yourself warned.

Yesterday we learned from Christopher Elliott how to avoid danger while traveling. In light of this news, the column might be worth a second look. [...]
