A touch of merger sanity, finally

Continental’s announcement that it would not seek a merger with United Airlines (and I expect with any other airline) demonstrates corporate sanity.

Using some of the exact reasons annunciated by Delta and Northwest for their merger proposal, Continental came to the opposite conclusion. High fuel prices make it better for them to remain independent. Additional routes make management more difficult. Combining workforces will create major disruptions.

Continental, instead, will be focused on strengthening its own operations and working to create an alliance with American and BA.

There’s a concept! Stick to your knitting.

Exactly what I thought when I heard the news. Good for Continental.
