A world cruise nightmare

A world cruise nightmare — Passengers who paid up to £42,000 for a 103-day round-the-world cruise were stuck with a view of a windswept Isle of Wight today as experts tried desperately to fix their £200 million cruise ship. The cruisers should have set sail from Southampton Sunday for a once-in-a-lifetime trip through 40 ports from Madeira to the Falklands.

Woman jailed for keeping rental car — A woman who failed to return her rented vehicle to the dealership will serve time in jail. Karen Costa, 37, of Lincoln, N.H., pleaded guilty in Belknap County Superior Court to a Class A felony charge of theft of rental property. She was accused of keeping the rented owned by AutoServe Car and Truck Rental of Tilton.

‘Shocking’ misery at Ryanair — Transport unions said yesterday that a website established to act as a forum for disgruntled workers at Ryanair, the leading European low cost airline, had been deluged with responses since it was opened four months ago. The International Transport Workers’ Federation set up the website www.ryan-be-fair.org to offer Ryanair staff “the freedom to discuss their work, conditions and any problems they have.”

Tsunami? Europeans go, anyway — Basking in artificial sunlight in the Igloo cafe in Stockholm on a gloomy January day, Rebecca Hellqvist flicks through brochures dreaming of exotic Asian travel, undeterred by the recent horrors of the tsunami. “On the contrary, it makes us eager to go,” said Rebecca after her dose of light therapy to offset the winter darkness.

I really needed that eye-opener — Someone who needs an early morning beer or cocktail will soon be able to get relief at Palm Beach International Airport. The County Commission voted 7-0 Tuesday to amend the ordinance governing alcoholic beverage sales. It exempts the airport’s terminal building from the ban on the sale of alcoholic beverages before noon on Sundays.

Dinner and a break-in — Two men who broke into a hotel and started cooking a meal were caught when they made a noise in the kitchen and disturbed the night porter, a court heard. Paul Bennett and Darren McGlinchey made deep-fried chicken goujons and were tucking into their meal when the porter called police.

Editor’s note: Apologies for the delay in today’s blog. The stork made a little delivery last night.
