Airfares point skyward

The average fourth quarter airfare in 2007 rose four percent from the previous year to $331, according to a government report. With fast-rising jet-fuel prices, heavy demand for air travel and lower capacity, U.S. airlines consistently raised prices throughout 2007 by raising their base fares or adding surcharges, reports USA Today. Rick Seaney, CEO of Farecompare.com, told the paper that he doesnt’ expect the fare hikes to stop. American Airlines and Delta Air Lines recently raised fuel charges on domestic round-trip flights, marking the industry’s 12th effort to raise fees, Seaney said.

Other highlights from the report:

  • Most expensive place to fly: Anchorage, AK, had the highest fourth-quarter average fare ($539).
  • Least expensive place to fly: Dallas, TX, Love Field ($200).
  • Highest increase: Houston Bush had the largest year-to-year average fare increase in the quarter: Fares jumped 16.2% to $397.
