Airlines resist LaGuardia plan

Federal officials are proposing to cut flights and to auction rights for new flights at New York’s LaGuardia Airport. Under the plan, LaGuardia would the the third of the New York area’s major airports to have flights reduced by the government, USA Today reports. The number of takeoffs and landings per hour would be reduced from 75 to 74. The plan would also add new routes out of New York that would help reduce delays. “This proposal increases choices for passengers and adds competition, which is proven to lower fares,” Transportation Secretary Mary Peters told USA Today. “It also cuts delays.”

The plan also calls for the major airlines already at LaGuardia to lose up to 20% of their existing flights at the airport. Those flights would be auctioned to the highest bidder, beginning as early as the end of the year. By increasing competition, the government is hoping carriers will fly larger planes to LaGuardia and therefore carry more passengers to the airport without adding delays.
