Alitalia back in play?

Silvio Berlusconi, Italy’s new prime minister, is trying to restart the Alitalia merger talks with competition from Aeroflot for the Air France/KLM team.

He also wants Alitalia to be an “equal” in any new airline group. That may be difficult since Alitalia doesn’t have any money, the government can’t give it any money and labor demands are excessive. Otherwise, Alitalia wouldn’t be a beggar. It could be a chooser.

After this posted initially, Air France/KLM said that their offer to buy Alitalia had been withdrawn. Looks like Alitalia is getting ready to play its last hand.
