American next to charge for luggage?
Following in the footsteps of other major U.S. Airlines, American Airlines is paving the way to charge to check a second bag. Reuters reports that American, the world’s largest airline, said it filed a notice with the Canadian government indicating it may change its bag fee structure in Canada. That country requires 45 days notice to review such a change. The airline is expected to charge $25 to passengers for checking a second bag, although the airline officially has not made a final decision. Other airlines that charge for second bags: United Airlines, Delta Air Lines and US Airways.

When did Delta add the charge? I missed their announcement. Their website is still saying 2 free checked bags.
From the Atlanta Journal Constitution
“The new charge, which takes effect May 1, follows moves by United Airlines and other carriers to add similar fees for transporting a second piece of luggage, which previously has been included in the price of the ticket.
“The change is due to rising fuel costs and … the changing competitive environment we face today,” Delta spokesman Kent Landers said Monday. “This is in line with general industry practices.”
Look on the bright side. Airlines were already charging you to check bags with sky cabs. If you split wardrobe between bags (half of each type in each in case one is lost–you have some stuff to wear to the store), you’re hosed. Do them a favor, ship them by Fedex, with all the TSA banned items. That way airplanes won’t need more fuel to fly with all that baggage. ;-) You won’t feel any more secure: Hotel clerks can lose shipped baggage as well as airlines lose checked bags. ;-) Don’t be like the Road Warrier who jams all the weighty material in carry-ons, taking up all the overhead space. Fly naked.
