Argentina — foreigners pay double for air travel
Argentina has a two-tiered airline pricing system. Locals pay about half of what foreigners pay.
Foreign tourism is one of the most important income streams for Argentina. The country has forbiddeen a two-tiered system for hotels and restaurants or museums and national parks, however, the double standard still exists when it comes to flying within the country. The landmark law that eliminated the price differentials for virtually every sector of the travel industry excluded air travel within Argentina.
But there are ways around the system. Savvy foreigners can make their reservations in Argentina and pay for their tickets locally and in most cases, if they drive a hard bargain, pay the locals’ rate. There are also travel agencies that specialize in skirting the two-tiered system.
Just as we have consolidators in the U.S. that allow travelers to often purchase airfare at 21-advanced-purchase prices the day before the flight, Argentina has agencies that sell tickets for the locals’ prices.
