Berlin Airlift airport to close
Tempelhof, the Berlin airport at the epicenter of the Berlin Airlift back in 1948-49 will close in October. Even iconic airports sometimes have to close to make room for change.
The Berlin Airlift became a symbol of American determination to keep West Berlin free and out from under the dictatorial thumb of the Soviet Union. For 15 months, pilots flew plane loads of food into this airport with landings reported as frequently as one plane every 90 seconds.
Today, traffic has been reduced to only dozens of flights a day because most air traffic has moved to one of the city’s newer and less-restricted airports.
Berlin officials, planning to close air operations, have no clear idea of what to do with the airport in the future. The massive terminal building, once the largest building in Europe, is a protected historic edifice. However, no one has suggested a use for the building that might be commercially viable. perhaps a museum and park on the Tempelhof sight may be in the future.
