California legislation would let skycaps pocket luggage fee

Skycaps across the United States grumbled about the loss of tips when airlines started to charge $2.00 to $3.00 for curbside check-in service. Now they have a new ally.

Skycaps at San Francisco International Airport that talked to KCBS San Francisco said that they are “being deprived of up to 40 percent of their wages.” One skycap said,

Just like the lady, just right here, she gave me nothing but the $2. I explained to her that it was $2 for the bag and if she’d like to give a gratuity there is you know, she gave me $2 and goodbye.

Lloyd Levine, an assemblyman from Woodland Hills, Calif., feels the skycaps’ pain. While he understands that “Time’s tough, we may have to raise prices a little bit,” he says that it’s “fine, but I don’t appreciate disingenuous fees being hidden.”

To that end, he is introducing Assembly Bill 408 “to ensure that money given to skycaps stays in their pockets. “‘Simply put, Assembly bill 408 was written and introduced to protect the skycaps in California,” he said of his legislation.’”

If this bill passes and is enacted in California, don’t be surprised if the airlines sue to have the new law repealed.
