Cruise ship impounded; passengers stranded
Hundreds of tourists were stranded in Portugal’s Madeira Islands after authorities forbid their cruise ship to leave port because of a financial dispute. The Associated Press reports that the ship would stay in the port pending a court ruling before it can continue on to Falmouth, England. The ship, The Van Gogh, arrived in Funchal on Tuesday carrying 430 passengers and 220 crew. Association of British Travel Agents spokeswoman Frances Tuke said the tourists were of mixed age groups, but that most were retired.
