Cut-rate carriers still rate high
Christopher Elliott looks at why budget carriers like Southwest and JetBlue are still the tops with travelers, in spite of some high-profile gaffes. While price is a factor, many customers (Elliott included), will opt for Southwest or JetBlue because of customer service. In JetBlue’s corner is Stan Prus, an attorney from New York, who puts it succinctly, “They screw up less.” In Southwest’s corner, Gibbs LaMotte. She tells Elliott, “I like Southwest because of its engaging flight attendants, its generally good on-time performance, its use of Americans-only phone agents and its round-trip pricing method, where legs are priced separately. But most of all because of its change policies: no $100 fees and no restriction on using the unused return leg of a round trip ticket.†As for Elliott, he — and more important, his kids — like them both.
