Delays pile up in February

More than 31 percent of commercial flights in the U.S. arrived late, were canceled or were diverted in February. This figure is actually an improvement over February 2007, when 33 percent of flights arrived late — marking the worst month on record, according to a report by CNN/Money.com. Last month, 28 percent of flights were late. According to the article, one reason for the persistent delays is that airlines are flying smaller planes, therefor crowding the skies and the gates. Among February’s worsts:

  • American Eagle Airlines: more than 39% of its flights were delayed by at least 15 minutes;
  • JetBlue Airways: its evening flight from Newark, N.J., to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., arrived an average of 69 minutes late every time it took off.
