European airport security suspect
I just finished an interview at Zurich airport at their unique consolidated operations center where the airport has airport, airline, security, luggage handling and others co-located. Security was intense in order for me to walk the tarmac and get out to the operations center. Evidently, there are much more lax systems in places such as London Heathrow and Milan’s Malpensa airports.
At Heathrow, GreenPeace activists were able to scale fences and bypass security and actually climb on top of a BA airplane and unfurl a banner decrying the airline’s desecration of planet earth. In Malpensa, only this week, El Al Airlines found grafitti scrawled on the inside of the baggage hold. That kind of incursion is even more disturbing.
In this day and age of security where passengers (and even flight crews) are stripped electronically, subjected to eye scans, forces to take off shoes and unpack bags, the screening of airport workers servicing aircraft, moving luggage and driving trucks across the tarmac should be upgraded.
