Expert: Don’t let down your guard
Former FBI profiler Clint Van Zant says a little preparation and common sense will keep you safe when you’re traveling. Here are a few of his suggestions:
- Do your homework. Research your destination. What are the most common threats? Any customs that vary from American culture? Can you ask for help or police in the native language?
- Tell someone where you are. Let your family or friends know where you are going. Give them the contact information of the hotel, your flight numbers, etc.
- Don’t rely on your cell phone. Your cell phone may not work overseas or in remote areas. Talk to your provider about international service and coverage before your trip.
- Don’t walk alone. In fact, traveling in threes is best.
- Be wary of new “friends”. Don’t tell them where you are staying or have them buy you drinks unattended.
