Got something to sell? Advertise to a captive audience

If you have a business or a service to sell and you want to advertise to a captive audience, Spirit Airlines may be able to help.

The air carrier has launched what it calls “Mile High Media” to customize advertising on board its planes. Advertisers can choose from “a variety of customizable media options including seat backs, window shades, overhead bins, tray tables, drink carts and more.”

Sales Director Michael Pewther says the service helps offset fuel prices so they won’t have to raise air fares. Advertisers will have “more than 2,000 times the viewing exposure aboard a three-hour flight.”

Spirit also promises that the advertiser’s company won’t be “lost in the shuffle” since only a select few partners are featured, unlike mass media which features hundreds of other advertisers.

The airline has signed up The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism as its first client. The ads will feature “the destination’s colorful and visually appealing campaign on overhead bins, tray tables and bulkheads, as well as seatback inserts with special package offers to The Bahamas from Spirit Vacations.”

It’ll be interesting to see how this will play out. If it’s successful, other airlines may follow suit. Pretty soon air travel will be nothing more than a glorified bus or train ride.
