Hawaiian locals take on tourists
Full-time Hawaii residents have just about had it with their more enterprising neighbors, who have turned their houses into tourist attractions. Legislators are now scrambling to address these short-term rentals that may be operating without the required government approvals, reports the Associated Press. Disputes between neighbors have turned hostile. “There’s a lot of ugly things occurring in neighborhoods,” Katherine Bryant-Hunter, chairwoman of a neighborhood board on the island of Oahu, told the AP. “People are really frustrated because they don’t want to fight with their neighbors, and nobody wants to throw out the visitors.” In one of the most contentious cases, Oahu resident Susan Cummings sued her neighbor Marlene Roth, accusing her of operating an illegal bed and breakfast.
