Heathrow woes on opening day
New terminal, same hassle. British Airways canceled 34 of its 380 flights Thursday as the airline had problems with baggage, parking and security screening of staff members. According to a USA Today report, a software breakdown crippled the terminal’s high-tech baggage delivery system, leaving hundreds of arriving passengers waiting for their bags. The new system was one of the new terminal’s most touted features and one that British Airways hoped would eliminate many of the complaints its passengers had at Heathrow’s old terminals. The airline expected to have the kinks ironed out by Friday. Stay tuned.

Why doesn’t this latest catastrophe surprise me? They don’t need to make Heathrow bigger, they need to get more airlines flying from other airports like Stansted, City and Luton instead. These smaller airports make much more sense. Airlines like Eos and Silverjet which couldn’t get slots at Heathrow for their transatlantic flights and have to fly from Stansted and Luton instead are actually better placed I think to offer passengers a better service without all this hassle that’s become typical of Heathrow.
