Hotels testing new features
Where can you find a waterproof mattress and wireless electricity? In the X-room, a test guest room at the Courtyard by Marriott in Newark, Del. The X-room, the New York Times reports, was adapted from an exhibit at the Hospitality Financial and Technology Professionals trade show as a laboratory for Marriott to experiment with concepts and technologies before implementing them across many properties. Mike Jannini, executive vice president for brand management at Marriott, told the Times that research had gained much more prominence in the business and that hotels were increasingly moving away from price as a differentiator. Instead, hotels are grouping people by attitude and lifestyle. And what has he learned from the X-room? “Everyone is interested in the Nintendo Wii,” Jannini said. “All hotels see that has potential.”
