Is the world ready for power-assisted luggage?

At a time when every checked bag costs extra, is the world ready for power-assisted baggage?

A company called Live Luggage is betting on it. It will introduce a line of power-assisted luggage tomorrow that promises to make it easier to get to and from your departure lounge.

In a press release (PDF), the company addresses a few of the obvious questions. The luggage is power-assisted, for example, so it won’t go on its own. It also says that “the weight distribution is what makes the luggage manageable for a six year-old.”

So where do the adults come into the picture?

The price for the new PA series is $1,365.25. That’s without shipping. If you click on the chart for shipping, at today’s currency conversion rates, it is a whopping $149.21 for the first bag and $43.18 for each additional bags.

I think I’ll stick with my good old manual luggage.

Apparently the case weighs in at 10.9 kg. The company claims this is 3 kg heavier than the average suitcase of this capacity. I don’t know about everyone else but I buy super light luggage so I can take full advantage of my luggage allowance. My largest suitcase weighs 4.45 kg, and I am usually at the 20 kg limit for economy when I travel. So no thanks.

It’s a great start. If they add a seat travelers can drive, golf cart style, to the gate. We need more noisy electric vehicles clogging up airport corridors.

Avoid the whole luggage hassle. Ship luggage ahead. Go from house to hotel with nothing in hand except your briefcase or laptop case. Board faster, travel lighter.
