JetBlue’s failure to launch at LAX

What on earth could have caused JetBlue to “temporarily suspend” plans to begin offering flights from Los Angeles to Boston and New York?

Would it have anything to do with the fact that oil prices just rose to a record high of $120.93 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange?

Back in February, they announced that service to Logan International and to JFK from LAX would be launched on May 21. Now, JetBlue spokesman Bryan Baldwin says that the discounter decided that — get this — high fuel costs made the move too pricey!

Surprised? I think not.

The LA Times, which first broke the story, talked to an unnamed JetBlue official who provided the following breakdown: Last year it cost $9,600 to fill up a JetBlue Airbus A320 for a transcontinental flight and the cost today?

$15,000.

The Los Angeles Times reports that service at Burbank and Long Beach scheduled to begin on May 21 is still on track because Embraer 190 jets that consume less fuel will be used.

As part of its West Coast expansion, JetBlue recently added a flight from Long Beach to Austin, Texas, and on May 21 will begin service between Burbank and Las Vegas, Long Beach and San Jose, and San Diego and Seattle, among others.
