Legalizing prostitution in Las Vegas

Sin City is debating the development of “magnificent brothels” and legalization of prostitution. The world’s oldest profession is legal almost everywhere else in Nevada. Las Vegas is left out because the city has more than 400,000 citizens, the only other city in Nevada that meets that level is Reno.

Mayor Oscar Goodman interviewed in a BBC story was clearly in favor of the idea.

Everybody knows it goes on, many businesses profit from it, but in-keeping with the city’s slogan “What happens here, stays here”, it is rarely discussed.

“It’s disingenuous when people say they don’t want to legalise it,” says Mr Goodman. “Right now it’s uncontrolled and unregulated. There’s no check and balance as far as the women’s health is concerned and legal brothels could be an important revenue-raising device for the city,” says Mr Goodman.

“When you speak about it intellectually, not morally, it makes sense,” he says. “If we had a referendum or ballot on legal brothels, it would probably pass.”

But experts claim that it is not the religious right that might deep six this legalization proposal, but the vast underground sex economy in Vegas. Too many people are making too much money from illegal sex to want to see anything changes. Plus, the convention folk and casinos claim that magnificant brothels might actually be bad for business.

Go figure. We’ll wait to see what happens.
