McDonald’s curious math
Why does a sausage and egg McMuffin and a small coffee cost 20¢ more than the “combo” version with the same sandwich, larger coffee and fried potatoes?
I’m not an MBA, but I’ll bet some marketing guru came up with this pricing. Perhaps a marketing guru who used to work for the airlines, or who may aspire to working with the airlines.
I polled the others in line at DCA waiting for morning Delta flights and no one could figure out the math behind the offers. About three of us trying to cut down on carbs asked for the combos but told them to hold the potatoes. Heck, it’s worth 20¢.
By the way, I was thrilled that the airport prices weren’t hiked up beyond the neighborhood prices. As Cheap Charlie I was also happy to save 20¢. I just don’t understand it.
If there are marketing folk out there who can explain this, I’m ready to listen.
