Mechanics agree to unified contract

US Airways nearly has its mechanics working under one contract. The airline, which merged with America West in September 2005, has agreed to a contract with the mechanics union that includes pensions and 10 percent raises in the first year. “After two bankruptcies at US Airways and more than two years of negotiations after the merger, employees are finally seeing something positive,” union spokesman Joseph Tiberi told the Associated Press. The contract will need to be ratified by the airline’s 3,300 International Association of Machinists members. The deal marks progress, albeit slow progress, for the the Tempe, Ariz.-based carrier, which previously reached agreements with about 7,500 airport and reservations agents and with several hundred flight dispatchers, engineers and ground school instructors. US Airways has yet to reach accords with other employee groups including pilots and flight attendants, the AP reports.
