New ID plan could ease burden

Air travelers who have a “Ted Kennedy problem,” meaning they have names similar to those on terror watch lists, may be spared the extra security screening under a new plan. Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff told USA Today that the program will be announced today and is aimed at the tens of thousands of travelers who are pulled aside for questions at airports because their names match those on government watch lists. Such passengers are asked several security questions and asked to show identification to prove they are not the person on the watch list. Under the new plan, innocent travelers can allow the airline to add their names and dates of birth to company records to prevent the confusion from arising again.
