Now they’re desperate: hotel chain offers rooms at $8 a night
Super 8 is calling it a promotion. But guests might have another name for it: desperation.
The Parisippany, NJ-based hotel chain says it will offer rooms at $8 a night to “commemorate its heritage.”
Turning the clock back to celebrate its heritage, the Super 8 lodging chain will sell rooms for a nightly rate of $8.88 – the charge for one night’s stay in 1974 when the first Super 8 hotel opened – to 800 lucky people every day for eight days beginning on a date notable for the number eight: Aug. 8, 2008.
According to Super 8 parent Wyndham International, the special sale will begin at 8 p.m. EDT on each of the eight days, will continue until the 800-room daily allocation is exhausted. The $8.88 rate, which does not include fees and taxes, may be used to book rooms at Super 8 hotels in the United States and Canada for stays through Dec. 30, 2008.
John Valletta, Super 8’s president, says the sale is a way of thanking our guests, who have made Super 8 hotels the “leader in providing clean and affordable accommodations for more than three decades.”
Perhaps. But it is also a nod to the difficult economic times and the fact that hotel rates will either hold steady or drop in some markets as the recession deepens.
Let’s hope it’s more the former than the latter.
Update: Less than one minute after this posted, Super 8 “withdrew” the press release with this information. Ooops! We’ll keep you posted.
July 25, 12:30 p.m. — Received a follow-up email from Super 8. “The above mentioned release that was received this morning was sent in error; please hold this until Tuesday, July 29th. Thank you. — Kimberley Davenport, Communications Coordinator, Wyndham Hotel Group”
