Overpacking will cost you
As airlines, desperate for new revenue streams, start to charge extra for overweight baggage, it’s time for travelers to consider how they pack for air travel. Five of the seven major U.S. airlines (Continental, Delta, Northwest, United, and US Airways) plan to charge most customers $25 each way to check a second bag starting May 5 (American Airlines and Southwest Airlines have yet to announce such a move). Aviation.com advises travelers to ship their bags when possible and to read the fine print on airline baggage policies. The report warns business travelers, “Airline policies don’t cover business samples and trade-show materials if something goes amiss. They’re in the same category as cash, valuables, jewelry, and electronics.”
