Pilots often key to smooth mergers

US Airways and America West merged in 2005, but the pilots for the combined airline are still at odds over seniority. According to an Associated Press report, it could take years for the pilots in the company to work under a single contract. Seniority determines what kind of planes pilots can fly, what routes they fly and holiday vacation schedules. According to the report, pilots from the former US Airways aren’t likely to give up their seniority without a fight. Union representative say the pilots sacrificed billions of dollars in pay and pension cuts to keep the former US Airways afloat before the merger.”We see ourselves at the bottom of the barrel for pay and quality of life issues, and now our seniority is being stripped?” Arnie Gentile, a US Airways pilot and former union representative told the AP.
