Saturday night stay, coming back?
United Airlines in its zeal to surreptitiously squeeze more money from its passengers is either forecasting a post-merger concern or making a last gasp before a coming bankruptcy.
The return of the Saturday night stay is one of the pernicious problems of lowered competition that travelers will find in the wake of a series of airline mergers. It is one of those irritating rules that burdens air travelers and makes it more difficult for Americans to be free to fly around the country.
A quick look at airfares finds that the Saturday night stay has crept back into airline pricing models, however, the requirement is only in place where legacy airlines control the city pairs.
I would suggest that readers contact their congressman or congresswoman and encourage them to look very carefully at the Delta/Northwest merger. These two airlines still have not explained how a merger will save money on jet fuel. Neither have they explained how more economies can be squeezed from two airlines already pared to the bone through very recent bankruptcy proceedings.
