See you in … Samoa? Governor tries to jumpstart tourism
American Samoa’s tourism industry is at a standstill. So what’s an island nation with no visitors to do? Why, start a convention and visitors bureau, of course.
And that’s exactly what Governor Togiola Tulafono has done, hoping it will “enable this US territory to tap into the multimillion dollar tourist industry that has benefited other Pacific locations.”
The American Samoa Visitors Bureau will reportedly be “a semiautonomous government agency” which will promote the territory as a tourist destination.
For those of you not familiar with American Samoa, there’s a dedicated Web site that describes the area in detail, including the geography of the region.
The eastern Samoan island of Tutuila, Aunuu and Rose, along with three islands Tau, Olosega, and Ofu of the Manua group and Swains Islands make up the total American Samoan territory. Their total area is approximately seventy seven square miles.
What is there to do in American Samoa? Here are five activities:
- The Fagatele Bay National Marine Sanctuary - A protected coral reef ecosystem inside a volcanic crater.
- Matafao Peak - The highest peak on the island is formed from volcanic rock.
- National Park of American Samoa.
- Mount Alava - Walk a 3 mile trail to the summit for great views of the island and harbor.
- Jean P. Haydon Museum - A museum with an excellent collection of Samoan artifacts and handicrafts.
See you in Samoa next year? Perhaps.
