Should passport info be tightly held?
You don’t have to be a candidate for the highest office in America to have your privacy breached. The practice of hiring private contractors to aid the passport application crunch may be putting sensitive information about Americans at risk. State Department Spokesman Sean McCormack told the Associated Press that the Justice Department has an “open invitation†to become involved. Attorney General Michael Mukasey has indicated that prosecutors are likely to wait until the State Department assessment concludes before deciding whether to open an investigation of their own, according to the report. The State Department’s Office of Passport Services employs about 2,600 contractors nationwide. “These contractors go through vigorous personal integrity tests, the same kinds of tests that career government employees undergo,†McCormack said.
