Skybus makes it 3 closures in a week
Skybus Airlines ceased operations Saturday, citing a slowing economy and rising jet fuel costs. The Columbus Post-Dispatch examined the carrier’s ills and found that there were divisions among the executive ranks, which also contributed to the shutdown. Former CEO Bill Diffenderffer, who stepped down two weeks ago, and CFO Mike Hodge, who would replace Diffenderfer, did not see eye to eye on management issues. Hodge denied that he had tendered his resignation back in March, as one source told the paper, but he did admit to being frustrated. Diffenderffer, when reached for comment, said he did not abandon the airline. “Two weeks ago when I left, it wasn’t looking this way,” he told the Post-Dispatch. “Things got suddenly worse in the last two weeks. For one, bookings just fell off the cliff. Summer bookings that should’ve been coming in just weren’t.” The writing was obviously on the wall, and while the price of fuel contributed to the airline’s struggle, a lack of consumer confidence and spotty service more than likely to blame for Skybus’s demise.
The Portsmouth Herald reports on the dreary scene at Portsmouth Airport a day after the airline closed.
