Skycaps win $325,000 suit

A federal jury on Monday ordered American Airlines to pay $325,000 to skycaps at Boston’s Logan Airport for lost tips after the airline began charging a $2-per-bag bee for curbside check-in service. According to a report in The Boston Globe, the jury concluded that American Airlines violated Massachusetts’ tip law by keeping the $2 fees. “We’re very pleased that the jury saw what American Airlines is doing here, which is digging into the pockets of some of its lowest-paid workers to boost its own profits,’” Shannon Liss-Riordan, who represented the skycaps, told the Globe. Skycap Tony Pasuy testified that his tips dipped to about $70 to $80 per day after the fee went into effect. Before the fee, he made some $200 a day in tips.

Lowest paid before tips. Skycabs make 6-figure income that they won’t comment on or will be charged with tax evasion. Skycabs have the most stringent of seniority-based rules for tip revenue. American Airlines should charge $5 from the long term parking/rental car shuttles each time they pull up to drop off or pick up passengers. The shuttle drivers should charge a nominal fee for each bag passengers bring on board.
