“Smoking the funny weed”– air traffic progress

The House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee chairman voiced “pessimism” about easing air traffic congestion. And the ranking member said anyone expecting progress “is smoking the funny weed.”

According to a story in Congress Daily, House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Chairman James Oberstar has reservations about progress in air traffic problems negotiated by the Department of Transportation.

As the airlines continue to try to squeeze more flights into over-extended airports the committee sees coming problems even if the airlines can’t figure out that an airport with an hourly limit of 80 flights can’t handle 100 takeoffs and landings. Specifically, the Aviation Subcommittee Chairman Jerry Costello, D-Ill., wondered how Northwest Airlines expected to get 56 scheduled departures out on time in a 15-minute window from Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport.

Transportation and Infrastructure ranking member John Mica blamed the Senate for not passing an FAA reauthorization bill, and chided the Senate for not voting to confirm Robert Sturgell as FAA administrator.

Mica said that anyone who thinks progress is coming “is smoking the funny weed.”
