Soon, bumped passengers get $800

DOT bumping rules will change next month. Passengers who are involuntarily bumped from domestic flights and moved to another flight that arrives more than four hours later than originally scheduled will receive the value of their fare up to $800. Those involuntarily bumped who arrive within two hours of their originally scheduled arrival will receive up to $400. The time limits for international flights will be four hours for the $400 level.

The major changes are that the fee has been doubled, however, passengers now are guaranteed a set sum of money, there is also the “value of the airfare” kicker. I’m not sure how the airlines will value airline tickets. On a round trip ticket the return leg according to the airlines is virtually valueless according to anyone who has tried to get a refund for an unused round-trip ticket.

The other major change is that smaller commuter planes that carry as few as 30 passengers are now included in the compensation rules.

Here is the Chicago Times story about the changes.
