Tempers rise with the summer temperatures

Is this the beginning of a hot - as in temper - summer?

CNN reported Wednesday a drunk passenger tried to set the curtains of a Boeing 767 on fire when flight attendants refused his request for more liquor during a Delta trans-Atlantic flight.

The BBC reported last week that a man has pleaded guilty to six charges, including three assault charges, arising from an air rage incident on a Zoom Airlines trans-Atlantic flight.

And the Rocky Mountain News reported that a woman on a JetBlue flight this Tuesday began smoking in her seat, and allegedly assaulted a flight attendant who tried to make her stop.

While statistics are not yet available for these incidents, MSNBC.com just did a story this week titled “As travel gets more stressful, air rage a concern.”

And how long until we read about a passenger who reacts similarly when the flight attendants won’t give his or her thirsty children a free glass of juice? Or when they have paid to check suitcases and someone brings a bigger bag on board. Or when, as has happened to several flyers I know lately, the airline has run out of the “buy on board” food and there is NOTHING to eat but pretzels on a six hour flight?

After Wednesday’s Delta episode officials said “There was no apparent connection to terrorism.” But the way this summer is shaping up, Walt Kelly’s Pogo may be right - “We have met the enemy and he is us.”
