Thirsty at San Diego Airport? Bring Lots of Money

Bob Brewin from Government Executive.com notes in his newsletter:

As we all know, you can’t carry no more than three ounces of liquids (and stored in clear plastic bottles) through airport security anymore.

San Diego International Airport, which I passed through a couple of weeks ago, has capitalized on this situation by selling a bottle of soda at the uniform price of $3.22. That’s higher than the cost of a bottle of pop at Dulles International Airport, where it will cost you just over two bucks.

A TSA screener at the San Diego airport had one word for the cost of soda there: “rip-off.”

As one who calls San Diego home, my apologies for the latest rip-off at the airport. But, I offer this suggestion which has worked like a charm for me in the liquids-banned era: pack your own empty, reusable, sealable beverage container in your carry on. Once past security, fill it at a drinking fountain. If you aren’t crazy about the taste of plain water, several companies offer powdered drink packets sized to flavor a 16-oz bottle of water. (Crystal Light is my favorite.) For the price of one bottle of (overpriced) soda, you can get enough of these single serving drink packets to flavor 8-10 bottles of water. Happy hydrating.
