Travelers beat hassles by shipping bags

Many savvy travelers have been shipping their bags instead of taking them on a plane for years. But with increased carry-on restrictions and increasing fees charged by airlines for checked baggage, more air travelers are using luggage delivery services. The Associated Press reports that travelers are also using more traditional delivery methods such as the U.S. Postal Service, FedEx and UPS. Rates vary depending on the weight, distance and speed of the delivery. For example, sending a large bag (65 pounds) from New York to San Francisco, California, with a pickup date in five days would cost $149 through the delivery service Luggage Forward, according to the report. Adam Kolodny, 45, of Great Neck, New York, spent $1,200 to ship eight large bags of ski equipment and baggage to Colorado through Luggage Forward. He told the AP that the expense was worthwhile. “Between the overhead compartments being so full, stuff getting lost, the restrictions, it’s starting to work out that we may start shipping all our stuff all the time,” he said.
