Traveling with Edouard: everything you need to know about today’s twister

Tropical storm Edouard is lashing the Texas coast at the moment, but it could affect your next trip.

Several airlines have relaxed their booking rules in advance of the storm. It’s too soon to tell how disruptive Edouard will be to people on the ground, but a good place to go for official information is the Texas Department of Transportation Web site.

As of now, only a few roads are listed as closed on the Gulf coast. There are no meaningful flight delays listed on the Federal Aviation Administration’s Flight Delay Information page. However, FlightStats shows Houston flights have been temporarily grounded.

The true repercussions of Edouard may take hours, and perhaps days, to feel. While airlines have eased their booking rules on flights directly affected by the storm, they may yet invoke the weather excuse for flights using Dallas and Houston as a hub.

In other words, if you’re flying on an airline with a hub in Texas (such as American Airlines or Continental Airlines) be on the lookout for “weather” delays caused by conditions that are not directly related to your flight path. Rules are generally not bent for those flights.

Here’s a link to American’s contract of carriage and here’s a link to Continental’s.

Good luck out there.
