Tripso scoops the world

With American Airlines’ decision to charge for the second piece of checked luggage, predictions made almost two years ago here on tripso.com have come true as far as 4 of the 6 major airlines are concerned.

Last year British Airlines was the first major airline to break tradition and charge for the second piece of checked baggage. The uproar in the UK was heard here in the U.S.A. but after some small changes, it stood and was not repealed by BA.

Earlier this year, when United Airlines decided to charge for their second piece of checked baggage, we predicted that the major airlines would follow United’s decision. American, Delta and USAirways have already announced their intentions to do just that.

Soon, we believe, Continental and Northwest will announce that they too will be charging an additional $25 for the second bag to complete the new policy of the major U.S. airlines. Then — here is another prediction — the extra bag charge will be changed to $30 and eventually higher. All this will be blamed on jet fuel costs.

Just received the following from a reader who sent it to me rather than leaving a comment:

I work for ExpressJet. We allow two bags up to 50 lb each and I do not see us increasing the charge (or decreasing the bag quantity) soon. More than half our passengers check no baggage but have “valet bags from hell” with everything in them, anyway. Those valet bags can weigh 40+ pounds each! Reminds me of when I worked for Nigeria Airways.

I have never been able to understand why people have to pack so much ****, anyway. Who needs 95 pounds of stuff for four days in Sacramento, anyway? I don’t get it. I went around the world with one 20-kg suitcase, then when I got to Hong Kong I bought a couple others and filled them up … 25 years ago.

I forget who said it … “when you are going to travel, put out all your clothes and all your money. Then half your clothes and double your money!”
