United employees question possible US Airways merger

On Wednesday, the head of United Airline’s pilots union said that combining with US Airways should be a “last resort” for the carrier and suggested that the integration could take up to seven years.

Apparently, pilots and flight attendants alike are questioning the deal. Steve Wallach, who sits on the board of directors at UAL reiterated pilots’ “serious concerns” a day after flight attendants of both airlines also questioned the potential deal.

Pilots are skeptical that a merger between the two airlines would result in any significant cost-savings.

Wallach went on to say that “not only would it be unlikely to take traffic from other carriers because of the proposed Delta-Northwest combination” but also that “the chaotic labor situation at US Airways would delay integration and make any cost savings unlikely at least in the short term.”

Wallach says that United has its own problems and issues, but the problems of Arizona-based US Airways Group Inc. run even deeper.

The US Airways pilots union — the US Airline Pilots Association — hasn’t yet released a statement either in favor of, or in opposition to the proposed merger. UAL is also considering other options, including persuading Continental to leave its current alliance partners and team up with United.
