United talks with US Airways
United Airlines, apparently desperate for a merger partner, is now talking with US Airways. United is the No. 2 carrier in the United States, while US Airways is No. 7. News reports of the talks sent US Airways shares soaring more than 20% Monday to $8.62. United’s parent, UAL, fell 2.6%, to $14.81, USA Today reports. Together, the airlines operate nine airport hubs — Charlotte, Chicago, Denver, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Phoenix, San Francisco and Washington. None of them would be closed initially, according to USA Today. United had previously sought to merge with Delta Air Lines, which instead chose Northwest Airlines as its partner, and Continental Airlines, which recently broke off merger talks.
