Update: AA cancels more than 1,000 flights

American Airlines canceled more than one-third of its schedule Wednesday — more than 1,000 flights — to inspect wiring on some of its jets. The airline canceled 460 flights Tuesday. Tim Wagner, a spokesman for American, told the Associated Press the cancellations could continue beyond Wednesday. By Wednesday morning just 30 of the 300 MD-80 jets under inspection were back in the air. The jets are mainly used on mid-range flights, particularly from the hubs in Dallas-Fort Worth and Chicago. Traveler Mike Barnes, a 53-year-old information technology consultant, asked a probing question. He had flown from San Diego to Dallas Tuesday morning before his flight to Indianapolis was canceled. “If it was safe enough to fly from San Diego to Dallas, why isn’t it safe enough to fly from Dallas to Indianapolis?”
