Update: Freakish Fay still pounding Florida
Tropical Storm Fay continues to harass Florida this morning, disrupting the travel plans across the state. As I write this, the storm is stalled off the coast near Daytona Beach.
High wind and rain are closing roads and causing unexpected flooding. Not a good time for a road trip, needless to say.
I’m about a half-hour drive from Daytona Beach, and the conditions here have deteriorated in the last few hours. It looks like a hurricane out there.
In addition to the resources listed in this post, here are a few other sites that can help you get around Fay.
The Florida Division of Emergency Management has the latest travel-related advisories. The state’s Transportation Department also offers a free 511 service that can be accessed by cell phone or online. The Florida Highway Patrol lists road closures in the area. (Stay away from A1A near Daytona.)
FlightStats is reporting that several airports are affected by Fay, including Melbourne International Airport, which is closed, and Orlando International Airport, which is experiencing excessive delays.
Kennedy Space center, which is only a few miles from the worst of the storm, is partially closed today.
Here’s the thing about this storm. Although it isn’t gathering strength, it also isn’t moving. When it does, it’s expected to double back toward Central Florida, flooding more streets and causing even more flight delays — and who knows what else.
As a traveler, the biggest mistake you can probably make is not taking Fay seriously.
