US Airway pilots can’t agree among themselves
If the machinations within the “merged” pilot groups at US Airways are any indication, the Delta/Northwest combination has a long way to go.
After more than two years negotiations are at a standstill and a new pilots’ union has been selected by disgruntled pilots.
The “younger” company, American West, took over the “older” company, US Airways. That has created seniority issues as big as the Grand Canyon with differences in the view of “senority” that is as wide as the two Canyon rims.
Older US Airways pilots who had been flying for many more years than younger America West pilots feel that they should move to the top of the list for plane and route choice based on their seniority.
The once American West pilots see it another way. Their airline bailed out US Airways. They saved the other pilots’ jobs and should be at the top of the seniority list because they are the acquiring company.
This will take more time. In the meantime, the airline is operating their pilot groups as though they are two separate airlines.
Delta and Northwest should get ready for a simllar experience.
