Virgin Atlantic grounds all massages

Virgin Atlantic has eliminated all in-flight beauty therapy services, including massages, which it has provided to its premium class customers for nearly two decades.

A careful review of customer demands indicated that such services are being utilized more on the ground and this may be coming a direct result of the airline’s offering of lie-flat seats in the Upper Class suite, the enhanced entertainment system options and the option to plug in laptops.

A Virgin spokeswoman said that, “More customers may be opting to sleep or work than take advantage of the in-flight therapy option.”

The 320 in-flight therapists are being offered jobs as either ground-based therapists, cabin crew members or other positions within the airline.

Have you ever flown Virgin Atlantic and taken advantage of any of these types of in-flight services? Tell us about it in the comments!

A few years ago I decided to burn some miles and take a friend with me for a quick trip to the UK and France. We flew Upper Class on Virgin. We both requested in-flight massages. He got his and really enjoyed it.

I got a card good for a massage on my next Upper Class flight because we were going to land in 90 minutes when my turn came (huh?).

Well, he enjoyed his anyway. Grrr.

Several years ago I made an appointment for a manicure two hours prior to landing, on a transatlantic Virgin Atlantic flight.

It was a “first” for me, twice over.
My first manicure, my first manicure on an airplane.

Most enjoyable - but the idea of having a manicure on the ground now seems so unromantic, normal and boring in comparison!

Confession: So I will continue to cut my own nails!
