Welcome to emergency landing week
It must be emergency landing week.
First, we had the frightening case of the Qantas Boeing 747-400 on its way from London to Melbourne, which was forced to divert to Manila after an explosion last Friday. Investigators now believe an oxygen tank was to blame for the mishap.
This weekend, two female passengers on an XL Airways flight from Kos to Manchester attacked flight attendants with vodka bottles after they were denied a refill on their drink. Apparently, the ladies smuggled their own alcohol onboard and also breached airline safety rules by smoking in the toilets. The flight was diverted to Frankfurt, Germany.
And yesterday, a Southwest Airlines flight returned to Baltimore-Washington International shortly after takeoff when the cabin filled with smoke. Turns out it was a faulty fan.
An Allegiant Air flight packed with passengers was forced to make an emergency landing Sunday, too. The MD 80 jet was en route to Allentown, Penn. from Tampa when it reported one of its engines was not running correctly.
Is it my imagination, or are we having an epidemic of emergency landings?
It’s probably my imagination. These are just high-profile incidents, but planes make unplanned stops all the time.
Even so, I’ll be on the lookout for vodka bottles, oxygen tanks and faulty fans when I fly tomorrow.
